One page typescript of a transcription of a Confederate soldier's diary entries for 9-12 April 1865. The soldier was at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Topics discussed include fighting the morning of 9 April; flag of truce and Lee's going to Grant's headquarters; terms of surrender; General John B. Gordon's farewell address to his troops; General Lee's General Order No. 9; another speech by General Gordon, referring to the possibility of a second Southern rebellion; and formal surrender of arms on 12 April, after which the soldier and his regiment were paroled and started for their homes. The soldier who wrote the diary was the grandfather of Richard E. Hyde, late of Charleston, West Virginia.

Typescript by John Hatcher, a Confederate veteran and West Virginia native, titled "Recollections of the Civil War 1861-1865". Hatcher served in the Confederate Army from August 1861 until he was taken prisoner in November 1864. Hatcher writes about his unit's movements, battles participated in, officers encountered, and hardships endured. For further information, see "Scope and Contents" and "Biographical Note".

Two autobiographical publications by West Virginians who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War: "A Diary Depicting the Experiences of DeWitt Clinton Gallagher in The War Between the States While Serving in the Confederate Army" (1945) and "Recollections of a Life Time" by Colonel Daniel S. This collection contains documents and other material regarding the Civil War, including a diary, letters, reports, clippings, a muster roll, and other material. The majority of items in the collection regard the Civil War in West Virginia. Items within the collection are facsimiles and photocopies. Highlights of the collection include: the diary of Alex McGraw, who served with the West Virginia First Light Artillery; a letter from Captain Robert Coles of Virginia Fortieth Infantry, Wise Legion to Colonel Lucius Davis requesting certification to purchase necessary equipment; a letter from General John B. Floyd to A.W.G. Davis giving authorization to raise supplies for the Confederate Army of the Kanawha; a morning report of the Fifth Brigade, Confederate Army of the Northwest commanded by William Booth Taliaferro; and a muster roll of the Second Virginia Volunteer Cavalry, Company G. Most of the letters are to Helen M. Robinson of Fetterman, Taylor County, West Virginia, from relatives and friends. Subjects discussed include housekeeping, fashions, farming, schools, religion, and the Civil War from both the Confederate and Union perspectives. There are frequent, specific references to the political and military state-of-affairs in the upper Ohio Valley region.

Transcript of the record and roll of Company G of the Confederate Virginia 10th Cavalry. The company record was kept by Sergeant H. W. Lowther of Harrison County. Information recorded includes names and ranks of soldiers, payments made to soldiers and for supplies, miles traveled, and places the company stayed. Several related letters are also transcribed. The transcript was made by Clifford Myers, State Historian and Archivist, in 1932; this collection contains a photocopy of Myers' typed transcript. See also A&M 1194, Myers, Clifford, Compiler.
