Herbert E. Valentine (1841-1917) served in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection contains a 50-page scrapbook compiled by Valentine with newspaper clippings written in 1911-1912 about his regiment's war activities, photographs from a monument dedication ceremony for his regiment in New Berne, North Carolina in 1908, and 39 ink wash scenes sketched during the war years.

Materials related to historical organizations (particularly District of Columbia area Civil War roundtables); Civil War printed materials and memorabilia; and personal materials.

The collection consists of letters written mostly by Isaac White (1837-1889) to his wife, Mary Virginia "Jinnie" Day White, while he served with the Confederate Army as an assistant surgeon during the American Civil War. Many of the letters are written while encamped along the Shenandoah Valley. Other papers include literature gathered by Bess Duvall White Snead, White's grand-daughter, in her search for military information about Isaac White.

Materials consist of correspondence, publications and ephemera, organizational and committee reports, and photographs, relating to Johnston's involvement with historical and civic organizations including the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Society of the Sons of the Revolution, Virginia Institute for Scientific Research, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquites, and the Southern Historical Society and association with Douglas Southall Freeman and the VPI Alumni Association.

The James H. Lane Research Collection is a collection of research revolving around James H. Lane. The collection includes copies of letters, newspaper clippings, and book excerpts, along with photographs, focusing on Lane's time in the Confederate Army, as well as his time as a professor at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). The collection also includes two reels of microfilm, with their creation dated as 1991.

Also contains a small set of general materials which includes items related to the preservation of lands adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park.
