Ellett, Robert Thaddeus, 1836-1904
The Ellett Family Papers consist of 35 letters written by Dr. Robert Thaddeus Ellett (1826-1904), who served as assistant surgeon in White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, for the Confederate States during the American Civil War. His letters are written to Sue French of Pearisburg, who would later become Ellett's wife. Other items include biographical and family history information, photos, clippings, a 1961 dedication to Col. W. H. French marker program, DAR applications, and "The Family Album," an 11-page typescript.

The Henry Clay Deshields Collection contains letters sent to Sarah Deshields from Henry Clay Deshields during his service in the Confederate Army between 1861 and 1865. The collection also contains biographical information on Henry Clay Deshields and the book, Civil War Echoes: Voices from Virginia (1860-1891) by James I. Robertson, Jr. There is also a framed CSA Service Appointment Document dated May 1861.

Henry Goddard Thomas Letters and Memoirs 0.1 Cubic Feet 1 folder

Thomas, Henry Goddard, 1837-1897
Henry Goddard Thomas was born in Maine and entered the American Civil War as a private yet rose to the rank of brigadier general by the war's end. After 1862 he was involved with the recruitment and organization of Black troops in the Union Army. He commissioned several troops, in particular the 79th and 19th U.S. Colored Infantries. He remained in the U. S. Army after the war and retired in 1891. His collection consists of twenty-two letters to Thomas from friends and relatives. Many of the letters refer to the Freedmen's Bureau and the newly freed slaves' attempts to establish schools and churches.
