The ollection is mainly composed of letters written by James E. Rearden to his wife and his mother in the years 1861 and 1862. James Rearden was a Confederate soldier for the Army of the Potomac, 7th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War.

James Gallagher was a soldier for the Union during the American Civil War. This collection contains photocopies of letters written by James Gallagher to his Father, Sister, Mother, and Aunt, primily written from Hilton Head Island and Morris Island in South Carolina. The letters are meant to update his family on his health and what he had been doing for the Union Army. This collection also contains photocopies of several receipts that were made out by two different undertakers for Jane Gallagher and others and a reference letter for John Gallagher.

The James H. Lane Research Collection is a collection of research revolving around James H. Lane. The collection includes copies of letters, newspaper clippings, and book excerpts, along with photographs, focusing on Lane's time in the Confederate Army, as well as his time as a professor at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). The collection also includes two reels of microfilm, with their creation dated as 1991.

Robertson Jr., 1982-2001. Large collection of notes, papers, and correspondence relateing to Virginia Civil War counties and units. Also contains a small set of general materials which includes items related to the preservation of lands adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park.

This collection includes the papers of James R. Perdue and his family. Items include a program for the Battle of the Crater reunion, a Sunday School concert flyer, seven obituaries for Perdue, a letter from J. R. Perdue, Jr., and two ledgers. Perdue (1837-1915) was a banker from Manchester, Virginia, and served as a Confederate soldier in the Otey Battery, Virginia Artillery during the American Civil War.

The James W.M. Harris Papers consist of over 200 letters written either from or to Harris or immediate members of his family between 1857 and 1909. The majority of the letters are from James to his wife Mary, written almost entirely during the Civil War. These letters contain descriptions of the siege of Vicksburg, life in Richmond, and first hand descriptions of African-Americans during the war. Harris also frequently recounts current events during the war, as well as encounters with Belle Boyd and Jefferson Davis. Other letters are from Mary to her husband relating day to day happenings, from various family members to other family, several letters from Harris to his daughters, a lengthy letter from Harris's mother describing conditions in Mississippi during the war, and finally condolence letters to James on the death of his wife.

Jeremiah White Graves was a farmer in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The collection consists of a microfilm copy of Graves' extensive diary and a typescript manuscript of selected transcribed passages from that diary.

John Harville Diaries 0.4 Cubic Feet 2 boxes

The collection contains eight handwritten diaries chronicling John Harville's experiences during the American Civil War. From August of 1861 to January of 1864 Harville served with the 7th Wisconsin Regiment, Company F. He then transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps for the remainder of his term, ending in July 1864. His diaries include details and stories from camp life, largely around Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. Suffering from chronic "congestion of the lungs," Harville spent Autumn 1862 to Spring 1864 in hospitals. He continued to document this period with stories of daily life, chores, staff and volunteers at the hospitals, and war news.
