This collection contains images of both African and African American individuals. The subjects photographed include military personnel, men, women, and children. Some individuals were photographed inside of a photographer's studio. The images vary in size and format and range in date from circa 1850s-1945. Each item has a description at the file level.

This collection contains primary and secondary resources pertaining to Robert E. Lee and the Lee family. Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. Photograph album, circa 1865-1920, of Charles Page Bryan entitled "Some Beautiful and Interesting Women I Have Known." The book contains black and white and tinted photographs, cartes-de-visite, and newspaper clippings of hundreds of women including Ethel Barrymore, Sarah Berhardt, Florence (Lathrop) Field Page, Alice (Roosevelt) Longworth, members of royalty, and wives and daughters of diplomats.

A collection of 17 photographs, copies, and postcards related to Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson, his first wife Elinor Junkin and second wife Mary anna Morrison. The collection includes two original cartes de visite. One, a retouched image of Jackson in his pre - Civil War U.S. Army uniform without a photographer's imprint and the other, a view of his grave by Michael Miley, of Lexington, Va., c. 1870 - 75.The postcards date to the mid 20th century.

Journal written while Commodore Charles Henry Bromedge Caldwell was in command of the Naval Forces on the Pacific and South Atlantic Stations of the United States Navy. Entries detail the ship's journey throughout the year 1876- 1877 and document encounters with other vessels, dignitaries, and countries as well as the day to day operations of the ship and handling of situations as they arose. The staff journal was kept on behalf of the Commodore by H.N. Caldwell, Secretary in the United States Navy. Included with the journal is a small framed picture of Commodore Caldwell and a silver cup with his name inscribed upon it.

Modern copy of carte de visite photograph of James Edward Allan Gibbs (1829–1902). The Rockbridge County, Va. inventor was a partner in the Wilcox and Gibbs Sewing Machine Company.
