This collection contains a pre-edited manuscript of John P. Frank's book, Justice Daniel Dissenting: A Biography of Peter V. Daniel, 1784 - 1860. This manuscript contains a great deal of Virginia history, as well as many small details that did not make it into the final version of the book.

The original collection contains a letter (May 22,1778) from John Taylor in Fishkill, New York to William Woodford about Woodford's promotion during the Revolutionary War and his feelings about the war. There is also a biographical sketch of John Taylor, and one of John Penn.

The Lewis M. Dabney III papers consist of manuscripts, notes, transcripts, articles, reviews, personal journals, bibliographic sources, audio cassettes, and compact discs, relating primarily to his research on the life and works of Edmund Wilson, an American writer and critic in the twentieth century. In addition to copies and transcripts of Wilson's writing journals, there is correspondence across a large network of intimate relationships, friends, and acquaintances of Wilson. The relationships of particular historical importance include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mary McCarthy, W.H. Auden, André Malraux, Vladimir Nabokov, Ignazio Stone, and Isaiah Berlin. The audiocassetes contain interviews completed by Wilson or Dabney on Wilson. (Boxes 1-17)

This letter by Robert Lewis Dabney is addressed to Robert E. Lee. Dabney writes that an advertisement of his Stonewall Jackson biography gives credit of Lee's review and revisions to the publisher instead. He explains to Lee that the publisher decided to do this, not him.

Part memoir, part treatise, part collage and experiment, Krista Franklin's Under the Knife is an excavation; a dig at the sites of the construction and demolition of the poet/artist's selves. Franklin plays fast and loose with fact at the crossroads of the history of her maternal line and her own in a ruptured conversation about inheritance and the generational traumas that blossom in the body. Under the Knife hiccups, cross-fades and stops midsentence as Franklin cuts through the illusion of memory, the pathologies of history, and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.

William Beverley Pettit Correspondence, 1850/1918 .4 Linear Feet

This is a collection of correspondence between William B. Pettit and his wife Arabella ('Bell') with scattered letters from other friends and relatives. The letters that date from 1850 to March 1862 include correspondence between husband and wife while Pettit was away on business. The war letters begin in March 1862 and end with Pettit's last war letter to his wife on March 3, 1864. After that date there are letters from Pembroke, the Pettit's son, while he attended school at Ashland, Va. The turn of the century correspondence concerns Confederate Veterans' activities and post-war business correspondence. Also included are newspaper clippings, one photograph, and the obituary of William B. Pettit (1905). The collection also includes Pettit's Civil War manuscript diary, 1862-1864, and account book. These two books are bound together.
