Alexander Wilbourne Weddell papers, 1888-1947

Mainly materials related to Weddell’s career as a diplomat and ambassador of the United States in Argentina and Spain. The papers include diaries/calendars, correspondence, financial records, scrapbooks, diplomatic files, organizational records, speeches, Virginia House, publications, miscellaneous, and Virginia Chase Steedman Weddell papers. The bulk of papers are correspondence which starts in 1883, but is especially heavy after 1927. The correspondence is both personal and professional and concern his diplomatic career and missions along with civic and philanthropic organizations. There is also documentation of the construction and maintenance of the Weddell’s Richmond home, Virginia House.

This series includes correspondence, proofs, and reviews concerning Leyburn's book The Way We Lived. Correspondents include Kenneth Rockwell, Marshall Fishwick, Rupert Nelson Latture, Michael Barr, and Lon K. Savage. There are also photographs of Leyburn, his music programs, and notices of his death.

Papers of basketball icon Jerry West and research papers of author Jonathan Coleman for his collaboration on the autobiography of West. Jerry West, born in Chelyan, West Virginia in 1938, played basketball for West Virginia University (WVU) and rose to fame as a player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) before turning to basketball coaching and management. The collection includes materials that West loaned to Coleman for use in co-authoring the book West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life, as well as Coleman's book drafts, various materials he collected for background research, interviews he conducted for the book, and his research notes. Formats include correspondence, ephemera, typescript and printed book draft manuscripts, clippings, printed material, photographs, video and audio recordings on various media, artifacts, scrapbooks, and digital files, among other materials. Subjects include West's time at East Bank High School; his college recruitment and basketball career at WVU; his employment with the Lakers; the West by West book; West's career as a basketball coach for the Lakers and manager for the Memphis Grizzlies; his family life; events honoring West; various individuals, including Chick Hearn, Rodney "Hot Rod" Hundley, Ann Dinardi, Jerry's brother David West, and the West and Creasey families; and other subjects. This small collection contains primarily a series of photographs of Dr. Stuart McCorkle throughout his adult life, ranging from informal prints to professionally made portraits. In addition, the collection originally included copies of books authored by McCorkle and have since been transferred within the Special Collections department. Of great note is the typescript of his autobiography, which provides in great detail, insight into his life and opinion of political matters such as city planning, bureaucracy, and local government.
