Correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, publications, photographs, and other papers (1965-95) of Dr. Joanna Strosnider Nesselroad documenting the organization and administration of the nation's first Head Start Program. Dr. Nesselroad began the first Head Start Program in McDowell County in 1965, and has served as West Virginia's regional training officer and as a national consultant for the Program. There are also letters, newspaper clippings, publications, photographs, slides, and other papers (1930-86) of a former West Virginia University Agriculture professor, W.W. Armentrout. Subjects include milk production and distribution, agricultural economics, broiler industries, and the West Virginia University College of Agriculture. Also includes financial records of the Armentrout Memorial.

Maxwell family
Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907). Founded in 1922, the Virginia 4-H All Stars are the highest honor for the Virginia 4-Hers, and membership is based on leadership, service, and activities. The records of the Virginia Chapter of the 4-H All Stars span the years 1964-2014. The collection includes minutes, correspondence, financial reports, bylaws and policies, membership rosters, and photographs. It also includes the organization's mission statement, constitution, and 75th anniversary materials. The collection also contains materials about the Interstate Order of 4-H All Stars and about the midwinter and summer conferences.

Barns, William D.
Dr. William D. Barns (1917-1991) was a professor of history at West Virginia University from 1940 to 1985. His fields of specialization were American agriculture and labor history, West Virginia and regional history, American economic history, and the United States since 1860. The material has been divided into three main sections of archives, books, and periodicals, and described to the box level. The contents of this collection were created or collected by Dr. William D. Barns and Mrs. Doretha Barns from the 1920s to 1995. The majority of the material pertains to the academic career of Dr. Barns. Mrs. Barns continued to collect material until 1995. Two large series that relate specifically to Mrs. Barns are the League of Women Voters and Mrs. Doretha Barns. In addition, she contributed to the series on the Federal Government, Miscellaneous, Pacifism, and Society of Friends.
