Essex County (Va.) List of Negroes Belonging to Those Under a Guardian and Unsettled Estates, 1821-1825

Abstract Or Scope

Essex County (Va.) List of Negroes Belonging to Those Under a Guardian and Unsettled Estates, 1821-1825, is a volume that records lists of slaves held by persons who inherited via a will still in probate or as a result of widow's dower rights, and lists of the slaves belonging to an unsettled estate. Several of these lists are for slaves held by a guardian for his charge. The lists give the name of the owner, widow, and/or guardian; to whose estate the slaves belong; the names and ages of the slaves; some familial relationships, especially that of mother and child; and the date that the list was recorded by the court. Some of the lists are additions to previous lists that give slave births or deaths since the original list was recorded. There is an index at the beginning of the volume that lists in alphabetical order by surname the names of either the estate holder or the legatee and the page number where the list can be found.

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
