Daybooks, ledgers, journals, letter books and reports. Primarily concern the various business enterprises of the Salt Sulphur Springs Company including general store, hotel, stage line, telegraph company and farm. Also a letter book of the Oriental Powder Mills, Charleston, W.Va, of which John W.M. Appleton was agent; general store daybooks of E.D. Ballard; hotel and general store cash and daybooks of Erskine and Caruthers from Lexington and Salt Sulphur Springs. Records of the M.C.C.C. and O. Company of Waldingfield and Mill Creek, W.Va., and Mill Creek School records and Sweet Springs Gristmill and hotel records.

List of guests at the Salt Sulphur Springs, including place of residence, and numbers of horses and servants. No data is given for the years 1831-1833. Pasted in the back of the last volume are doctors' prescriptions for medicine at Union, West Virginia, in 1883.

Account book, 1819-1835, of Connecticut textile entrepreneurs Samuel and Bethel Morris, possibly of Danbury, Fairfield County. Contains detailed transactions with named male and female textile workers, who worked out of in their own homes, participating in a cottage industry managed by the Morrises. The Morrises oversaw network of textile workers in specified area villages like Haystown, Longridge, Newfield, Oxford, "Redding" and Stonyhill (the Morrises generally appended towns of residence to worker's names). ...The workers executed specified stages of the production, including washing, carding, and oiling wood; spinning and dying yarn; weaving specified yard goods; making specified articles of clothing (like pants and stockings). Typical entries include name of workers, their town, kind of work performed, type and color of textile product made, and rate paid. The services were sometimes paid in cash, but more often in form of barter goods, such as grains, foodstuffs, meat, raw wool, dyestuff, oil, soap, hats, hatboxes, lumber and wood, footwear, clothing.

Two ledgers, two journals and a daybook, 1802-1859, of Samuel B. Finley, merchant, of Lexington, Va. Ledger "B" (MsV Ame29) contains accounts concerning the estate of John Tate (Samuel Finley, executor); daybook (MsV Ame 31) contains an inventory , 1813, of goods put into partnership with William Shields and A. Shields and a manuscript arithmetic copybook, 1832; and ledger, 1842-1842 (MsV Ame33) contains notes, 1851-1867, concerning a fruit orchard.

Account books, 1826-1891, of Samuel D. Morton and of Samuel D. Morton and Co. merchants, of Charlotte County [Va.]. One volume, MsV Ame96, contains a genealogy of the Elliott family.

Scrapbook, ca. 1860-1863, of an unidentified person pasted into the journal (account book), 1825-1829, of an unidentified merchant of Battletown [later Berryville, Clarke County, Va.] There are also loose papers, 1838-1893.

Scrapbook, circaa. 1873, of an unidentified person which contains newspaper clippings and manuscript notes pasted into an account book, 1814- 1821.

Papers, 1826-1857, (including accounts and memorandum books) of various mercantile firms with which Jacob D. Sheldon was associated in Williamsburg, Virginia, such as Jacob Sheldon & Co.; Cole & Sheldon; Sheldon & Maupin; Peachy & Sheldon; Thomas G. Peachy & Co.; and W. W. Webb & Co. Also includes papers of Jacob C. Sheldon and of Roscow Cole. The collection includes accounts with professors and students and staff at William & Mary; with Eastern State Hospital; and with other Williamsburg residents. William & Mary correspondents include Thomas Roderick Dew, Adam Empie, William Barton Rogers, and Robert Saunders.
