Copper Striking of Botetourt Medal (UA 2005.024)

Scope and content:

One circular medal struck from the original dies by Thomas Pingo at the Royal Mint circa 1772. The obverse has a profile of George III and the legend "Regnante Georgio Tertio MVSIS AMICO QVESTIUM MERITIS." The reverse shows a kneeling James Blair receiving the college charter from a seated William III and a standing Mary II. The legend reads "GVL et MAR. TRADVNT BLARD CHART COL ANNO REGNI QVARTO." The number of copper medals struck is unknown but probably exceeds the number of gold medals (eight) actually awarded to students. Purchased from Spink Sons Ltd. of London by the donor's family.
