English Five Guinea Coin

Scope and content:

One gold five guinea coin from England that bears the likenesses of King William and Queen Mary on the obverse. In 1692, five guineas was an equivalent of 20 shillings, a substantial sum of money. On the obverse of the coin, there is an inscription that reads "Gulielmus Et Maria Dei Gratia," which means William and Mary through the Grace of God. The reverse of the coin contains four crowned cruciform shields bearing the arms of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. The reverse is inscribed with the phrase "MAG BR FR ET HIE REX ET REGINA." The coin is approximately 1.5in. in diameter and is in good condition. Gift of Mrs. Gwendoline Mackreth. Located in Dec Obj S2, SS4. UA 2009.247
