Scope and Contents
A maritime invitation to the christening of the Pilot Schooner Virginia, which is a re-creation of the original 1917 Schooner. The front of the invitation features a white rope tied into a square knot. Within the knot is written "Ties, however, are required" in blue script. The invitation is folded in an accordion style, and the first five panels have depictions of different types of knots to include the "Sheet Bend," "Square Knot," "Bowline," "Figure Eight," and "Clove Hitch." Each knot is appropriately labeled above the depiction in blue block print. The sixth panel includes a description, the time, date and location of the event in blue script. The seventh panel includes a list of special guests for the christening ceremony. The final panel depicts the logo of the Pilot Schooner Virginia. The invitation measures approximately 4in. (length) x 4in. (width). It is in good condition with a neon green outline of the rope on the front of the invitation. There are two stains that look like burn marks on both ends of the rope on the front of the invitation. Transferred from box 9, folder 3 of the Office of the President, Sullivan collection.
