Croquet in Williamsburg Printing Block

Printing block with a metal plate. The metal plate features a relief of a row of eighteenth century houses with chimneys in the background. The foreground has bushes and men in women in eighteenth century clothing playing croquet. "363" is written and underlined in pencil on the right edge. The printing block was made by Charles W. Smith possibly to be used in the 1933 Colonial Echo. The printing block is 5.5in. (width) x 7.125in. (length) and is in good condition. There are green stains in the crevices of the house, grass, sky, and dress of one woman in the metal relief. There are also green stains along the edges of the metal plate. The back features a smattering of green and white stains as well as two splits running the length of the block. The bottom edge of the printing block has two 0.75in. splits that are parallel to the splits on the back. It also has a 0.5in. crack near the right, a 0.25in. crack in the center and 21 holes going across with a green stain on the eighth hole from the right. The top edge has two 0.75in. splits that are parallel to the splits on the back of the block. It also has a 0.5in. crack in the center with a black stain surrounding it. The right edge has a black stain running the length of the block bleeding in from the metal plate. The left edge has a two 0.25in. green stains and a 0.125in. white stain. Gift of Nancy Peters.
