Letter from William Pettit to Robert Williams, Williamsburg, dated November 14, 1772. Mentions an advertisement in the Gazette about Surveyors General "hath a good right to employ as Deputies whom he pleases, and sends such restrictions as he shall judge convenient." He also mentions "that my place is of little or no profit, there being no King's Land in this county," acknowledges he is in arrears, and that a bond was not mentioned in the advertisement.
February 27, 1773 letter from B. Smith to the Rev. John Nicholson stating that even though he was instrumental in getting William Pettit a surveyor's place "it is my duty to inform the Masters of William and Mary College that the said Pettit is not worth a shilling and the late Reverend Fickle has no estate in this colony. He also mentions land and the daughters of a Mary May and William May.
