Seal of William Claiborne

Scope and content:

17th century red wax seal of William Claiborne. Claiborne, who arrived to Jamestown in 1621 from Kent, England was a surveyor and planter that served on the Governor's Council twice (1623-1637, 1642-1661). He served in the militia during the last Anglo-Powhatan War (1644-1646). Claiborne had a dispute with Maryland authorities over his trading post on Kent Island, which he was eventually evicted from. Clairborne, a Puritan, also helped negotiate the surrender of Virginia to Parliament during the English Civil War. Seal measures 1'' x 1 1/2''. Good condition with markings still clear.
