Lynchburg Half Dollar
- Scope and content:
-
Scope and Contents Silver sesquicentennial Lynchburg half dollar. The coin was issued as a commemorative in honor of the 150th anniversary of Lynchburg's charter. It features Senator Carter Glass, who served as President Wilson's Secretary of the Treasury. Glass became the only person in United States history to have his signature on paper currency and a portrait on a coin, although the portrait violated the Act of April 7, 1866 forbidding any living person from their image being featured on United States coin or currency. The obverse side of the coin features an image of Carter Glass with "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God we Trust" and the name "Carter Glass" inscribed. The reverse side features an image of Lady Liberty with the Old Lynchburg Courthouse and a partial image of Monument Terrace (the Confederate Monument) behind her. Coins measure 32mm (length) x 3mm (thickness). Good condition with a slight buildup of grime but all imagines and inscriptions are clear. Gift of John Stewart Bryan. EDU2012.039
