Physician Price Fixing in 19th Century Virginia

Scope and content:

This exhibit tells the story about 12 physicians practicing in Charlottesville, VA in 1848 mutually agreed to create an agreed rate of medical charges for services.

Joan Echtenkamp Klein, the Alvin V. and Nancy Baird Curator for Historical Collections & Services at The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia, conceived the idea for the fee bill project and directed it. Todd L. Savitt, Ph.D., wrote the background information essay on fee bills in general and the Charlottesville fee bill in particular. He is a faculty member at East Carolina University in the Department of Bioethics & Interdisciplinary Studies. Janet Pearson wrote the introduction and the biographical sketches of the twelve signers. She gathered images and took photographs in the University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium and in downtown Charlottesville. She is a member of the staff of Historical Collections and Services. Sonya Coleman, also a member of the staff of Historical Collections, contributed to the design elements. David Moody, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library Webmaster, and Jason Bennett, Technology in Education Consultant, provided the programming architecture for the Web exhibit.
