Letters involving enslavement include the inquiry by Robert G. Harper, May 5, 182[3], for information about the "present condition, conduct, and prospects" of some manumitted enslaved laborers formerly belonging to Samuel Gist who were freed in his will. He also asks for the name and address of some respectable and intelligent person in the area where the freed formerly enslaved laborers now live who can send a report to Gist's relatives.
