Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and typescript poems that were in books from University of Virginia English Professor Floyd Stovall's copies of Arthur M. Sampley's, "This Is Our Time" and "Furrow With Blackbirds"(Arthur M. Sampley was poet laureate of Texas in 1952)

Biographical / historical:

Floyd Stovall was the Edgar Allan Poe professor of English at the University of Virginia (UVA) during the late 1950s and early 1960s, serving as the department chair while William Faulkner was in residence (1957–1958). He was the key American literature scholar in the department and was still chair when he corresponded with Faulkner in August 1960.

Arthur M. Sampley was the poet laureate of Texas in 1952 and president of the Poetry Society of Texas. Correspondence indicates that he was a friend of Floyd Stovall. His poems and correspondence were found in copies of his books owned by Floyd Stovall and have been added to this addition of the Floyd Stovall papers.

This collection was a purchase from Franklin Gilliam Rare Books to the Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia Library on 7 July, 2015.
