Stereoscopic view of the marble fireplace mantel in the new room at Mount Vernon given by Samuel Vaughan to George Washington in 1785. The mantel displays several porcelain items and a piece of coral. Mounted on orange board. The photographer's imprint on the front of the card reads, N. G. Johnson, Photographer, 309 9th St., Washington, D. C., Only Authorized Publisher of Mount Vernon Views. A printed label on the reverse reads: Marble Mantel in the State Dining Room, Mt. Vernon Mansion, Remarkable for its fine workmanship and historic association, having been carved in Italy and presented to Washington by an ardent English admirer, and on its passage across the ocean was captured by French Pirates, who, when they learned for whom it was intended sent it to the United States, uninjured.
