Charles Wall, Resident Superintendent of Mount Vernon and Mme. La-aid Phibūnsongkhrām look on. The following caption is printed on the reverse of the photograph: Field Marshall P. Pibulsonggram [Phibūnsongkhrām], Prime Minister of Thailand, arrived by air in San Francisco, California, on April 23 to begin a three-week visit to the United States on the invitation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In Washington the Prime Minister was the official guest of the U. S. Government and met with the President, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense and other high officials, conferring on matters of mutual concern between Thailand and the United States. He met with Congressional leaders in a joint session of Representatives in the Capitol. Before and after his stay in Washington, the Prime Minister visited a number American cities and towns, meeting civic, cultural and industrial leaders, and observing American government, industry and education at work. The Prime Minister also visited American defense establishments and military training centers. He was accompanied by his wife Mme. La-iad Pibulsonggram [Phibūnsongkhrām], and a number of Thai Government officials and aides. The Prime Minister's party departed for Thailand via Europe on May 14. Charles Wall, Superintendent of Mount Vernon, looks on with Mme. La-iad while the Prime Minister signs the official guest register. Mount Vernon is the house of America's first President, George Washington, and it is maintained as a National shrine. (55-9179)
