Physical description:
Black and white photograph of a beech tree in the southeast section of the bowling green next to the Mansion circle drive. The tree is near the circle storehouse (formely Butler's House). Back of photograph includes a handwritten note that read: 'Beech near the Butler's House (No. 99). Badly whipped and broken by sleet storms, 31" d.b.h. - 88' tall.'

Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
