Black and white sepia-toned photograph of trees along the southern edge of the Bowling Green near Lower Garden. Back of photograph includes text that says "From left to right tulip polar (65), basswood (51), white ash (50), basswood (50-1), horse chestnut (46), honey locust (45). (The white ash is 26" d.b.h. and 80' tall)."

Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
