Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
