Black and white photograph of a beech tree and a Kentucky Coffee tree at the northeast edge of the bowling green where the north serpentine path intersects with the Mansion circle. Back of photograph includes a handwritten note that reads, 'Beech tree on right - 29" d.b.h. (No 90); Kentucky coffee tree on left. - 32" d.b.h. (No. 89).'

Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
