Physical description:
Black and white photograph of a white ash tree #58 on the north edge of bowling green near the entrance to the upper garden. Back of the photograph includes a handwritten note that reads, 'White ash near entrance to Flower Garden: 35" d.b.h. 112' height. (No. 58). Hemlock to left (No.55) and tulip poplar, a tall tree to left (no. 57).'

Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
