Black and white photograph of a white ash tree #38 located on the south edge of the bowling green. Back of the photograph includes a handwritten note that read, '29" d.b.h., 70' height. Flanked by 2 old honey locusts along drive south of bowling green (Nos. 39 and 41).'

Regarding the measurements written on the back of the photograph, W. R. Mattoon, Extension Forester explains in an accompanying letter [September 22, 1932] the following: 'The measurements of height were taken not with a precise instrument but by the Biltmore stick that is only approximate. The diameters were carefully measured at a height of 4 ½ feet above the ground level.'
