A.L.S. 3 pages. Washington to Woodlawn. Eliza explains that she is not asking Lewis for money or for much of his time -- she writes that she is planning on going to Salt Sulphur, White Sulphur and Sweet Springs for her health -- further, she intends to go to her land near there, that had been left her by George Washington -- she asks Lewis for letters of recommendation to procure aid in establishing her claim, and for his description of the route from the Springs to Point Pleasant and stopping places along road. Name on original manuscript appears as "E. P. Custis." Autograph letter signed, integral cover, docketed, postmarked "City of Washington Jul 14", laminated, watermark.
