Darrell G. Van Ness began his service as a United States Army private in 1978, completing his basic training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in Armor School at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He went on to Ft. Bliss, Texas to 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) and was assigned to 3rd ACR F Troop. From 1980 to 1981 Van Ness was stationed in Garlstedt, Germany, in the AD4, and from 1981 to 1984 he served with the 3rd and 7th Cavalry B Troop.
