Ross Schmoll commissioned into the United States Air Force in 1959 after graduating from Cornell University, rising to the rank of Colonel before retiring in the late 1980s. Assignments included:
- B-47
- B-58 crew member
- F-11 crew member (radar navigator bombardier) stationed at Royal Air Force Upper Hayford (England) and subsequently in Thailand
- Deputy commander for maintenance, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina (four squadrons of F-4Es)
- Director of maintenance at the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE)
- Assistant Director of Logistics at USAFE
- Defense Logistics Agency
