Biographical / historical:

Frank Woodruff Buckles was born in 1901 and grew up on a farm in Missouri. He enlisted age 16 and joined the United States Army Ambulance Corps, arriving in France a few months before the end of World War I. At the beginning of World War II he was working as a civilian in the Philippines when he was captured by the Japanese and held in a prisoner of war camp for more than three years.
