James R. Treadwell served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic and engine and crew chief (1971-1973), and as a KC-135 boom operator and flight engineer (1973-1979). During the Vietnam War he flew on missions to refuel fighter aircraft flying over Cambodia.
