William Moriarty commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in 1959. In May 1964 he participated in an On the Job Training (OJT) program and was assigned to the 32nd Vietnamese Ranger Battalion as an advisor. In 1967 he was assigned to the Vietnamese Marine Corps.
