Charles L. Dailey grew up in Pennsylvania, attending college there and in Indiana. He joined the United States Army in 1957, went through flight school, and was rated to fly both rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Dailey served two tours of duty in Vietnam, piloting the U-1A "Otter" and the twin-engine U-8D.
