Colonel Leland H. Burgess commissioned at the University of Alabama as a 2nd lieutenant of artillery in May of 1965. He entered active duty in February of 1966 and underwent Artillery Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Burgess was a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War from July 1967 to February 1968.
