George J. Tompkins, Jr. enlisted in the United States Army in September 1942. He went overseas in 1943 and was assigned as a radio operator with the 1st Signal Company, 1st Infantry Division. Following time in North Africa, Sicily, and England, Tompkins participated in the Normandy (France) landing on D-Day and subsequently went into Belgium and Germany where he was in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. He was discharged in October 1945.
