Jack Talbot grew up in New Jersey and was working as a riveter when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He shipped overseas in March 1943 and was assigned as a radioman at Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry. Talbot's unit served in North Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany until the end of World War II.
