Julian M. Quarles, Jr. served as an United States Army infantry officer (36th Division) during World War II, taking part in the landing at Salerno, Italy. He and another officer were captured, escaped from the prison train carrying them to Germany, and then made their way back to their outfit after 33 days behind German lines.
