Guy C. Nicely, Jr. grew up in Lexington, Virginia and is a decorated veteran of World War II. He was drafted in the United States Army in February 1943 and soon joined the First Division, the Big Red One. After serving briefly in Sicily, Italy, his unit was sent to England to train for the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. He landed on Omaha Beach and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
