Frank E. King was born in 1922 in Wythe County, Virginia. He volunteered for the United States Army in September 1942 and served with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division throughout World War II. King was in North Africa, Sicily, and landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He subsequently saw action in other major battles, including Huertgen Forest, Germany, and the Battle of the Bulge. King served overseas for more than 30 months and was awarded several decorations, including the Bronze Star.
