Biographical / historical:

William Funkhouser, a decorated veteran of World War II, grew up in the Shenandoah Valley near Strasburg, Virginia. He joined the United States Army in February 1943 and served with F Company, 16th Regiment, First Infantry Division (Big Red One). He landed in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and subsequently fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
