Robert L. Cheatham, Jr. graduated from Clemson University, South Carolina, and was commisioned as a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program in August 1942. Following training he was shipped overseas and arrived in North Africa on December 26, 1942. On February 13, 1943 he was assigned to C Company, 26th Infantry, First Division. Cheatham was captured by the Germans at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia on February 20, 1943 and was a prisoner of war until he was liberated on April 29, 1945.
