Dear Sir,
I have just received your communication of the 4th inst. containing the kind proposition of bringing my name before the Board of Visitors of the V. M. Institute as a candidate for the Professorship of Nat. & Exp. Phil.

Though strong ties bind me to the Army, yet I can not consent to decline so flattering an offer. Please present my name to the Board and accept my thanks for your kindness.
