Scope and content:

The Applications and receipts records, 1879-1890 (bulk 1882-1887), are arranged by year and then alphabetically by soldiers last names in twenty-five boxes. Included are applications, certificates, correspondence, court oaths and testimonies, orders, postcards, power of attorneys, and receipts detailing Virginia veterans efforts to obtain money for disabilities received during the Civil War.

The applications consist of either a printed form or court testimonies detailing the soldiers service and disabilities. Included is information on the soldiers unit, length of service, injury, place (location or battle) where the injury occurred, and attesting to their Virginia citizenship. Often included is testimony from doctors and fellow soldiers certifying to the soldiers injuries. Also included are form letters sent detailing the amount of money sent to the soldiers.

One box (Box 25a) consists of applications from the counties of Charles City and Mecklenburg, that for some reason had not been scanned or microfilmed. In 2017 the box was scanned, indexed, and added to the online database.

This Series was indexed, scanned, and is available on the Library of Virginia's online collection discovery system. The applications are searchable by the name of the Confederate veteran and by the veterans' places of residence (city or county).
