Proceedings of a trial by a U. S. Military Commission of Harrison H. Stalnaker, who was accused of the crime of bushwhacking in regard to the deaths of Capt. Michael T. Haller, Sgt. Andrew M. Nester and William S. Martin on 24 April 1865 in Barbour County. The incident began when a small party of Confederates raided the home of a Union sympathizer. Their intent was to entice the Home Guard stationed at Camp Haller (Valley Camp) into an ambush. Stalnaker, whose defense attorney was Spencer Dayton, was found not guilty of the allegations of involvement in this episode which occurred two weeks after the surrender at Appomattox.
