    <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>James Albert Parker was born 8 October 1914 to Alpheus and Laura Parker in Salem, West Virginia. Parker married Lucy Katherine Fetty; the couple had four children, two boys and two girls. He enlisted in the United States military in 1941 and served in the Navy until the end of World War II. Parker lived most of his life in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he died 26 August 1978.</p>  </bioghist>

    <head>Historical Note</head>
<p>The USS Maui had been named the "USS Leyte" prior to May 1945. The ship launched in early 1944 and sent to the Pacific, where she served as a repair ship. After the the war, she transported veterans back to the West Coast. The USS Maui was decommisioned in 1946.</p>  </bioghist>

<p>Souvenir newspaper announcing the end of World War II in the Pacific published for the crew of the USS Maui. The newspaper was owned by James Albert Parker, a member of the ship's crew and a native of West Virginia. In addition to a number of articles regarding the surrender of Japan, the newspaper also includes an article about West Virginia Senator Harley M. Kilgore and the post-war need for coal.</p>  </scopecontent>
