Dr. Perley Isaac Reed (1887-1973) was an English and journalism professor and the founder of the School of Journalism at West Virginia University in 1939. Collection consists of a typescript copy of "The Modern Newspaper as a Social Instrument," which was written by Reed in 1948 with the goal of defining a good modern newspaper in the middle of the 20th century. Typescript has handwritten annotations and corrections, but is a photocopy. The book is divided into three parts: "The Newspaper as Public Servant," "The Newspaper as Society's Standard Giver," and "The Newspaper as Public Leader and National Defender."

Biographical / Historical
Perley Isaac Reed was born on September 18, 1887, in Lowell Ohio. He graduated from Marietta College and earned a PhD in English from Ohio State University in 1916. Reed served as head of the English department at the University of Maryland until 1920 and then came to West Virginia University to teach English. Reed founded the WVU School of Journalism in 1939. Perley Isaac Reed died in April 1973.
