This tool would have been used to apply a border decoration, mainly to the spine, of a book. It is now held in the rare book room to be used as a teaching tool to explain hand decoration techniques specifically related to the Hand Press period, which runs from the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth century, and to the early decades of the nineteenth century.
