 Biographical/Historical Information

During the Revolutionary era, Philadelphia's Independence Hall was commonly known as the State House of the Province of Pennsylvania. It was constructed between 1732 and 1756. The Second Continental Congress held their meetings in the State House during the Revolution, and in 1787, delegates gathered in the Assembly Room to write the United States Constitution.

 Scope and Content Information

This collection includes eight receipts for improvements carried out at Independence Hall. Many of them contain helpful lists of the materials used to refurbish parts of the building.

The Pennsylvania Executive Council paid John Parker for bricklaying and plastering at the State House in Philadelphia. Six payments were made during this time, and the receipt lists laborers and the quantity of materials used in the construction project. Signed by George Bryan.

John Parker received fifteen pounds fourteen shillings and six pence for fixing stoves and chimneys at the State House. Signed by John Bayard.

Levi Budd received payment twenty pounds for purchasing boards for the Committee Room. Signed by John Bayard.

Lt. Russel was paid the sum of one hundred twenty three pounds for his recruiting accounts. Signed by John Bayard.
